Solving the Qualification Problem
in the Language of the Causal Calculator

The qualification problem is the problem of representing properties of
actions in a way that makes new conditions for the successful performance
of an action expressible by adding new propositions. This is a special
case of the problem of elaboration tolerance.
We can distinguish between two kinds of conditions for the successful
performance of an action. It may happen that the action is simply not
executable when the condition is violated. Or it may happen that some
of the usual effects of the action do not hold in the state that results
from its execution. Accordingly, we can distinguish between two parts
of the qualification problem -- one deals with executability
qualifications, the other with effect qualifications.
In this talk we show how the qualification problem is solved in the
input language of the Causal Calculator. Effect qualifications can be
handled using "defeasible causal laws."
This is joint work with Joohyung Lee.

Vladimir Lifschitz is Gottesman Family Centennial Professor in Computer
Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin. He is interested in
logical foundations of artificial intelligence. Lifschitz received a
degree in Mathematics from the Steklov Mathematical Institute
(StPetersburg, Russia) in 1971. He is a Fellow of the AAAI, an
area editor of ACM Transactions on Computational Logic, an editorial
advisor of the journal Theory and Practice of Logic Programming, and a
member of the editorial boards of the journal Artificial Intelligence
and of the Journal of Automated Reasoning.
